What is the best entry level tech job?

Tech is a non-linear industry - you may start in one role and move into a completely different niche over time. Read on to discover entry level tech jobs you could get with little to no experience.

Entry level tech job: 1st Line Support / Support Agent

First line support is a great job for generalists. In a technology company, the support team is responsible for triaging and resolving problems that users have with the product. You can think of it like customer service with a technical slant.

As a first line support agent, you'll be taking calls and triaging tickets (support requests) from customers. You'll need to get to grips with the product and be able to deal with everyday problems by replicating the issue. If it's more complex, you’ll escalate tickets up the chain of command.

Looking to get into support? You'll need to be great at communicating with customers, managing your time, and juggling lots of queries at once. An interest in technology and a willingness to learn is key here.

This job would suit graduates or those with customer service experience looking for that first step into technology.

Progression is often available to you in a first line support agent role. You could move upwards into second line support, support analysis, customer success, data analytics, development, and more.

Entry level tech job: Sales Executive

Do you enjoy talking to people and building rapport? The technology industry is always in need of Sales Executives.

As a technology sales executive, you'll be responsible for helping create new business for the company. You could be generating lists of leads (potential customers) based on data and target fit. You'll need to understand the company's market fit and product in great detail, and you will learn to manage rejections and close deals.

Sales is a fast-paced industry, and you make more money the more you sell. This can be stressful for some people, but if you're commercially motivated and like the idea of challenging yourself daily you could be a great fit for this role.

This job would suit someone with retail sales experience; confident in approaching potential customers and hitting targets. A curiosity about technology and a self-starter mindset are both essential to Sales Executive roles.

Entry level tech job: Junior Project Coordinator

Project Management is the department responsible for delivering projects on time and on budget. Project Managers lead a team to complete work and achieve project goals.

In technology, a junior project coordinator is often responsible for coordinating project schedules, equipment, and information. You may also need to manage and allocate resource (time and work of different team members.)

You'll typically work within a project team, assisting project managers and senior project leaders in the delivery of work. Although you won't do the work yourself, you would benefit from an understanding of what the other team members are doing.

For example, a project coordinator in a marketing agency would benefit from understanding how social media, copywriting, and design work is produced. In a software company, you'll want to understand the development cycle, the specific workstyle your company uses, and product-specific information.

A Junior Project Coordinator job will suit someone with great communication skills - you will spend a lot of time interpreting information and moving it back and forth between resource and senior stakeholders. If you like a varied job with problem-solving as standard and have an interest in 'making things run smoothly', this could be a great role for you.

Entry-level PMO roles include project administrator, project coordinator, and project support officer.
